One of the most beloved Christmas characters of all time is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on Nintendo Wii console. It comes from the stable of Red Wagon Games and its box art looks like a scene from the movie. The game is just priced tagged $20 and is one of the best all-time gift items during holiday shopping seasons. Game goers are always tempted to picking up the title. However, unlike the movie, this game does not offer fun for the entire family. Let’s find out what a report of nj-code.com says.
Concept and Game Play
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer involves playing as such characters as Rudolph, Hermie the Elf, Yukon Cornelius, and Santa Claus. There are 4 mini games that can all be completed in a manner of minutes, and that is it. There is no continuing storyline to keep players coming back for more. The games, which involve: decorating a Christmas tree, painting toys, baking cookies, and delivering presents, are simplistic and require very little thinking whatsoever.
The designers attempted to make use of the Wii’s motion controllers, but players will find that they can still obtain decent scores during game play by randomly swinging and shaking the remote without really paying attention to what they are doing. It’s obvious that Rudolph is designed for young children, but even they are likely to tire quickly from the repetitiveness of each mini game.
Visual Effects in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
The character designs in this game were fairly well-executed. Rudolph and his friends all look authentic, and this should be pleasing to fans of the movie. Other than that, the graphics are subpar by current video game standards. The entire game has a grainy appearance to it. The designers may have been going for a nostalgic look, but clear and sharp images would have been far more effective. The characters move rather smoothly on screen, but the back drops appear to be amateur.
Three of the four mini games have simple backgrounds with dull colors and are unchanging throughout. In the game that involves delivering presents, there is some movement as you side-scroll across the screen in Santa’s sleigh. Unfortunately, the houses all look identical and the same mountains appear over and over again in the background, giving the game the same feel as a two dollar download off the internet.
Sounds and Music
Part of what makes Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer the movie so memorable is its music. Everyone loves to hear classics like “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas”, and “Silver and Gold” around the Holidays. This game really dropped the ball, as there is no Christmas music to be heard anywhere throughout. Instead the player is given a few generic tunes that add nothing to the game.
An effort was given for most of the game characters to have voices sounding close to the originals; all except for Sam the Snowman. The voice-actor couldn’t sound less like Burl Ives if he tried. Upon listening to him speak, parents will be groaning with disgust while even young children will be asking what is wrong with his voice.
In Conclusion – Should you buy Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for Wii?
A title like this could have had so much potential. Instead, fans are left with a game that has no lasting appeal. Anyone over the age of 5 will be greatly disappointed with the simplicity of the game, and the brief time that it takes to complete it.
Even smaller children that find the game cute and entertaining are likely to grow tired of it quickly, especially once the Holiday Season is over and Rudolph is long forgotten. For a $20 value, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer may seem like a good value, but this is one game that is better left on the store shelves.
Nintendo’s Wii is Fun for the Whole Family
Nintendo Wii’s innovative control system, which uses physical movement to play games, is perfect for any age group. Most Wii games are made for multiplayer enjoyment, so it is the best system for family entertainment and small groups of friends. Wii also has the largest amount of exclusive game titles, with classics such as the Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros, as well as new titles such as Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit, and of course not to mention Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Not only does the Wii have an excellent selection of Wii specific titles, but Retro gamers will also be pleasantly surprised by the collection of old Nintendo titles available for download for Wii’s Virtual Console. If that wasn’t enough the Wii also has some special WiiWare titles, which gives a fresh take on classic titles as well as some brand new 3D games and side scrollers.
Unfortunately, Wii’s hardware is a little dated, which accounts for the cheap price tag. Wii still only standard definition video output and does not support Dolby Digital surround sound, which basically means that the other video game consoles look and sound better. The difference in hardware and control scheme also means that a lot of third-party games available on Sony’s Play Station and Microsoft’s Xbox, such as Modern Warfare 2 or Batman: Arkham Asylum, aren’t available on Nintendo’s Wii.
Another issue is that the Wii is facing is that their innovative control system will soon be implemented into both the Xbox and Playstation. So, for those who aren’t big fans of Nintendo games, but love the new control scheme, it might be worth waiting for the other systems to release their interactive control systems.
