Stress has become one of the major health problems of the twenty-first century, causing physical and mental illness in millions of people every year. It’s not something that can be cured with medication, although in severe cases anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs can help with the worst symptoms. Overcoming chronic stress requires lifestyle changes that you must make for yourself, but it’s not always easy to find the method that works in your case. If you’ve tried relaxation techniques or meditation and struggled with them, don’t give up – they are essential ways in which you can combat stress; but you could also try another tactic for giving your mind and body a break from the effects of stress.
Take your mind off it
You may have heard the saying that a change is as good as a rest, and you will almost certainly have been told you need to get your mind off what’s worrying you by friends and family at some point. These pieces of advice are ones to listen to and could hold the key to busting your chronic stress. This is because one of the best ways to break the cycle of stress and anxiety is to divert your thoughts away from the problems and responsibilities in your life. By giving your brain something new to deal with that requires all its attention, you are effectively breaking the stress cycle, giving yourself a rest from the constant worry and the accompanying build-up of stress hormones in your body. One of the difficulties of meditating or trying to clear your mind is that it can be hard to stop or change your thoughts, but if you give your brain something new to focus on, there’s no room for the stress-causing thoughts. That’s why engaging in an all-consuming activity or learning something new can be so helpful in dealing with stress.
Ideas for stress-busting activities
Pretty much anything that requires your full attention will work, which means your brain needs to be fully occupied with the task at hand, leaving no room for the stressful thoughts. Taking up a new sport or game is an excellent way of diverting your mind because you will need to concentrate on learning how to master the skills required. If you’re focusing on how to stay on top of a horse and control it, or figuring out all the possible moves on a chess board, there won’t be any room for the stressful thoughts you normally carry around. You could try an extreme sport, which will thoroughly clear your mind of all other thoughts. Another perfect activity for diverting your brain is taking part in a role-playing mystery in one of the many themed Escape Rooms now available, where you have to assume the mantle of a character under pressure to solve a puzzle within a limited time period.
It doesn’t matter what you do to tackle your stress, as long as you do something. Unresolved stress can make you miserable and seriously ill, so do whatever you can to relieve stress and be healthier and happier.
