Do you have a dental appointment coming up? First, we want to congratulate you for that step! Many people skip out on the dentist and it ends up causing them a lot of pain in the future. The good news is that you going to the dentist will allow you to have a healthier smile and even a more beautiful one too. But how do you prepare for the dentist? Keep reading as the Waterloo dentist explain exactly how to do this.
Double check the time
The first tip is to always ensure you know the time the dental appointment is. If you made it a while ago, double check what time the appointment is by calling and then putting it on your calendar. This way you won’t forget about the appointment and can still make it around your schedule. Most dental practices also call and send an email as a reminder too. If you know your dental practice will be doing this, you will also get that additional reminder. Some dental practices have a fee to pay if you don’t show up or you cancel last minute so make sure you do show up and have it in your daily planner.
Show up early
The next tip is to show up early. If it is your first appointment with this dentist, you will want to show up at least 15 minutes early. That is because there is normally a lot of different paperwork that you will need to fill out and questions you need to answer. If you have already been to that specific dentist before, make sure you still show up a little early so that the dental practice stays on track. You also never know when the dental practice can squeeze you in early.
Note anything that has been wrong since you last saw them
One great recommendation is to note anything that has been going with your gums and teeth since the last time you saw the dentist. If you keep a notepad by your sink, this makes it easy to do. That way, you can simply bring in the notepad when you see the dentist and read it to them. If you have not done that, take some time to sit down and write out any concerns you have that you want to speak with the dentist about. One of the great things about seeing your dentist and the same one on a regular basis is that you end up feeling more comfortable with them and able to speak with them about any issues you have been experiencing.
Bring your insurance
If you have insurance, it’s important that you bring it every single time. If you have not visited that dental office before, it’s even more so important to bring your insurance card as well as identification. They will need the insurance information so that they can work with your insurance so that you can pay as little as possible. If you have been to the dental office before, it’s still a good idea to bring your dental insurance card in just to ensure they don’t have any questions about it.
Brush your teeth before you go
If you want to make your best foot forward, you will want to brush your teeth and floss before you go. Of course, you should be doing this all along, but it will show that you take care of your teeth and truly do care about them.
Note any questions you have for any of the staff members
Just as we said to note things that have gone on or gone wrong with your oral health, it’s also important to write down any questions that you may have for the dentist or other staff members in the dental practice. This includes the dental assistant as well as the dental hygienist. You have a chance to speak with them so you can now speak with them and ask them any questions you end up asking questions you may have had since you last saw the dentist.
Deep breaths if you have anxiety about the dentist
Many people end up having anxiety about seeing the dentist. If this sounds like you, it’s important to take deep breaths and remember that what you are doing is important for your overall oral health. Remember that it is completely normal that people get anxiety when they go to the dentist but it’s also important to remember the great benefits of going. You can always communicate with the dentist and the dental staff that you are feeling nervous about it. They will be able to either ease your anxiety a little or if it is really bad you can even get sedation so that you can be put to sleep during anything they are doing. Communication is key, even when you are at the dentist.
As you can see, there are a lot of ways that you can prepare for the dentist. Make sure that you take these tips and use them while you are preparing for the dentist. The dentist is a great thing, especially if you are able to go on a regular basis (every six months). Good luck and again, great job on choosing to see your dentist on a regular basis.
