The city of Bangalore is known to be one of the most happening places in the South. It is home to IT companies, great restaurants and nightlife and many popular monuments. However, what you’re probably not aware of is that Bangalore is also in close proximity to some of the biggest temples in India, all within driving distance of the city.

1. Tirupati:
Just 260 kilometres from Bangalore, Tirupati is a fantastic location to visit if you’re a fan of travelling and Indian temples. The route to this town in Andhra is scenic, with hills and beautiful roads, but the temple itself is something else altogether! Also known as Tirumala, it is a sacred spot for thousands of employees who throng here. It is said that making an offering of hair will please the Lord and fulfil your desires. It is one of the busiest and biggest temples in South India and the opportunity is just perfect if you’re in Bangalore!
2. Kancheepuram:
Located around 277 kilometres from Bangalore, Kancheepuram is another great place to visit if you love Indian history. The historic temple town has some of the most beautiful architecture in the form of minarets, ornate towers and more. The architecture has its own unique style and this has become the hallmark of South Indian architecture over the years. There are many temples you can visit here, including the Kamakshi Amman temple, Kailasanathar and Varadharaja Perumal Temple among others.
3. Alampur:
Located by the banks of the River Tungabhadra is Alampur, which holds a lot of historical importance. It was the seat of rule for many iconic rulers, including the Satavahanas, Bahamani sultans, Vijayanagara kings, Kakatiyas and more. According to history, Lord Brahma performed penance for Shiva here in the guise of a saint and Shiva appeared in nine different forms. There are nine different temples that celebrate every individual form
4. Lepakshi:
Founded in the 16th Century, Lepakshi was built during the reign of Vijayanagara King, Aliya Rama Raya. It was built after a royal treasurer was accused of syphoning funds without the king’s permission. There are two dark stains near the marriage mandapa which commemorate this and these are said to be the marks made by his eyes, so “Lepa-Akshi” literally translates to the village of the blinded eye. The temple is just 124 kilometres from Bangalore city, so book a car rental and you’re sure to have a nice weekend drive!
5. Mahanadi:
A historic site that was built back in the 7th Century, Mahanadi is most popularly known for the Mahanadiswara Temple and for having the nine foremost shrines of the Nandis. These nine Nandi temples all hold significant importance in Hindu culture and this place sees thousands of religious tourists every year.
Thus, Bangalore is close to some of the most popular pilgrimage sites which you can explore by car.
