Decades have passed since people started playing games on their personal computers. Developers of PC games are people who have contributed to the growth of the entertainment industry the most. All of us who remember the times when there were no computers (or at least no PCs as we know them from the end of the 80s onwards), know that there were times when you would literally sit at home and be bored. Computer games, undoubtedly are amongst best time killers, and playing your computer game certainly won’t make you feel bored. Nowadays we even play games on our mobile devices, especially our mobile phones, as we carry them around with us anywhere we go. All sorts of games can be played on smartphones these days, including arcade, strategy, casual, sports and even casino games. A lot of online casinos have a mobile-friendly version or a downloadable app.
Quake
We are going to start this list with an old 90s classic – Quake. Even though it was released in 1996, you will still find this game on many computers even today. Quake was a game that revolutionized the approach to first person shooters, and one has to admit that the work of id Software was pioneering in many ways. With various multiplayer options and enticing single-player game play, Quake certainly paved the way for many other games that came afterwards.
Half-Life
Next we have another game from the 90s. Half-Life, another sci-fi 1st person shooter was so popular that sold over 8 million copies in 6 years. This game won over 50 different PC games of the year awards. We probably won’t have to tell you much about the game play, chances are you have played Half-Life yourself. The makers of this game – Valve, used a modified version of the Quake engine.
The Sims
In the first year of the new millennium, Maxis released The Sims, and the meaning of the phrase ‘simulation game’ became synonymous with it. Probably nobody assumed that this game will have multiple releases and will become one of the most popular franchises in video game history. It is estimated that more than 175 million copies, of all games in the series taken collectively, have been sold from 2000 to 2014. If you remember the silly AI and the funny way in which characters behaved, please remember that it was 16 years ago that The Sims was clearly a revolutionary game in the time when it was released.
Grand Theft Auto III
While some may like the first two editions of the game that later received an iconic status- GTA, we think Grand Theft Auto III was the one that really launched GTA as one of the most popular game series. Numerous references, both positive and negative, of this game can be encountered all over the mainstream press. To some it is all about running people over, and stabbing prostitutes, but GTA III was truly remarkable in many aspects. In fact, it was so successful that the basic interface and game play have been kept in all future sequels.
Rome: Total War
Pretty much since Rome: Total War, introducing both a strategic and a battle map became the norm for strategy games. Many remember that very few games were like this before Rome was released. Not to mention the fact that it the AI was truly remarkable and even soldiers in a single unit were acting and behaving differently. Many similar games have been developed since 2004 when Rome was released, including other Total War sequels, but the first is the one that should get the credit.
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
Fans of Age of Empires I may disagree with us, but we feel that the second edition of this great game is the one that should get recognition. Of course, we don’t won’t to underestimate AoE I as it paved the road for AoE II, but Age of Kings with its improved game play and AI, plus better, more-realistic campaigns and multi-player options is the edition that made Age of Empires so popular.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
Like with the previous game, the second edition of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater/Skateboarding is really ‘the’ one. Skateboarding video games will never be the same after 2000 when THPS 2 was released. It still remains one of the highest rated PC games of all times.
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft was released 10 years after the original Warcraft: Orcs & Humans first appeared. Several expansion packs have been released since and it is regarded as one of the most popular MMORPGs of all times. During its peak period, there were over 12 million active players from all over the world. A total of 100 million accounts have been created since the game appeared.
Minecraft
Minecraft is a game which has been described as the only game that truly and fully embraces the open-world principle. The goal is simple- there’s no goal and you’re free to do literally anything you want. It is undoubtedly despised and criticised by some people, but it is the bestselling PC game of all time. Over 20 million PC copies of this game have been sold until the middle of 2015.

Call of Duty
Another first person shooter, published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty is the first game in the series of more than 10 video games that have been released in the period from 2003 onwards. More than 175 million copies of all editions and expansions of Call of Duty have been sold until April 2015, worth more than 10 billion U$D.
