Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time. But are you ready for a Unexpected disaster? Disasters disrupt thousands of lives every year. However, sometimes we can get in front of these life-altering events by simply being prepared. Here are some tips on how you can prepare for anything that life throws your way.
Develop a Family Emergency Plan
You and your family should discuss what you would do in any emergency. Discuss the type of disasters that would likely occur in your area, and pick two places to meet should you ever become split up. One place should be within your neighborhood, while the other should be somewhere out of town. Also, discuss what you would do if authorities suggest you evacuate your home, and familiarize yourself with escape routes.
Get the Right Insurances
One way of being ready for what life throws at you is to be covered for life and have the right insurances for any unseen circumstances. Although many people are aware of life insurance policies, some other policies you may not be aware of include pet insurance, multiple birth insurance, renter’s insurance, and hurricane insurance. It is best to be prepared for any situation. However, you can gauge what type of coverage is best for you based on where you live, your financial situation, and what stage in life you are in.
Pack Your Survival Kit
Much like some of the zombie movies you’ve seen on television, you will want to pack a survival kit for any emergency. Some things you might want to include in your kit are:
- At least 3 gallons of water per person in your home
- 3 days of non-perishable foods, including food bars that contain at least 2,000 calories
- Portable lighting such as flashlights or candles
- Emergency whistles
- Dust masks to avoid debris, fumes or gas
- Solar chargers
- Prescription medication if anyone in your family needs it
- Spare clothing, particularly layers such as jackets
- A Multi-tool
- Emergency Radio
- Extra Cash
These items are just the basics of what someone would need to survive during an evacuation or the event that you are stuck at home. You will want to adjust the list based on your family’s needs.
Being prepared in the event of an emergency can be the difference between life and death. Protect yourself and your family by doing as much preparation as you can. You don’t ever want to be caught by surprise.
