There are many horrors that overlap with thriller, supernatural fiction, and fantasy genres.

The most common elements we often find in these types of movies are demons, ghosts, zombies, extraterrestrials, vampires, evil witches, psychopaths, serial killers, and the list can go on. Even though these movies are intended to elicit fears, nightmares, revulsions, or terror of the unknown, people seek them and the movie industry keeps providing them.

A serial killer in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you/ Three, four, better lock your door/ Five, six, get the crucifix/ Seven, eight, gonna stay up late/ Nine, ten, never sleep again. Does this song sound familiar? If you are a horror fan, it should. Freddy Krueger is the main character of the horror series, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The first one was released in 1984, and it was directed by Wes Craven. The story revolves around four teenagers who are living on Elm Street, in the fictitious town of Springwood, Ohio. We are not talking about bad boys riding cool motorcycles on Young Choppers, but regular American teenagers.

Their dreams are invaded by a dead child killer known as Fred Krueger. The real problem begins when the kids start dying one after the other.

In this movie, if you die in your dream, you die for real. However, the story is not that simple. In order to get the rush and true pleasure from killing, Krueger needs his victims to become really frightened. So, he starts invading their dreams, creating more and more terrifying scenarios, until each of his targets becomes terrified and exhausted.

He manages to find each of his victim’s worst fear and nightmares and explores them to his advantage. How can you fight a dream character? It seems like a situation with no escape. Still, having the battle of good and evil in the center of the story, the villain is defeated, only to regain his strength and come back stronger in the next movie.

Mind games in ‘Se7en’

The best horror movies are not those where you can see monsters and a lot of blood flying around. Some of the best are those that will keep you in suspense and give you a feeling of unease until the very end.

Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, and Kevin Spacey manage to show that the worst monsters are humans. In Se7en, the first two actors play a couple of detectives looking for a serial killer, played by Spacey. There is nothing usual about the killings in this movie. Each victim is killed according to one of the seven deadly sins.

Moreover, the way in which they are left for the cops to find is truly horrific. Unfortunately, everything is a mind game, and even the detectives fall into the killer’s trap. Even if the villain is caught in the end, and it seems that the good conquered evil once again, things are not that simple. What he leaves behind is absolutely terrifying.
