Tybee Island is a casual vacation spot that offers a wide variety of activities for every member of the family. Less than 30 minutes from Savannah, this Georgia coastal community combines sand and sea with great food and southern hospitality for a relaxing time. There is something for every family member on Tybee.
Tybee Museum and Lighthouse
Because of its coastal location, Tybee was an important fortification during many of America’s wars. Georgia’s oldest and tallest shore beacon, the 60 foot high tower base of the Tybee Lighthouse was erected n 1773.
The existing 154-foot lighthouse was erected in 1887. Climb the 178 steps to the top and you will be rewarded with an incredible view that makes the climb worth it.
Exhibits at the Museum include early life on the Island, dolls, and Indian and Civil War Weaponry. Check with the Museum for the days and hours of operation before planning a visit.
Miley Cyrus Movie Filmed on The Tybee Pier and Pavilion
Five miles of uninterrupted public beach make a perfect arena for biking, walking, or building sand castles.
The Miley Cyrus movie, “The Last Song,” was filmed on the Tybee Island Pier nad Pavillion in the summer of 2009. Nicholas Sparks wrote the screen play for the movie. Other scenes of the movie were filmed elsewhere on the Island.
Concerts, art fairs and other events are held at the Tybee Pier Pavilion. Near the south end of the beach, the pier is also popular for dolphin watching, fishing, sunbathing or just relaxing in the sun.
North Beach Bird Sanctuary
Tybee boasts a wildlife refuge that attracts many notable varieties of turtles, birds, and other species. Bird watching is legendary on Tybee Island.
At the Sanctuary on the north end of the Island visitors spot Black Skimmers and red-billed Oystercatchers year round. In winter the array of visiting northern seabirds keeps birdwatchers occupied
Tybee Marine Science Center
The Center offers touch tanks and beach walks which are conducted several times a week. Learning about the wonders of the sea helps kids connect with the history of the Island. The center is located just a few steps off the Pavilion, Lectures and camps are available so check with the Center for schedules.
Fort Pulaski
Just North of Tybee on Highway 80 is Fort Pulaski, maintained by the National Park Service. Guided tours, musket and soldier demonstrations and cannon firings are offered.
Learn about the history and construction of this seacoast fort. Take a nature walk and try to catch a glimpse of the 11 protected species that have been identified there. Days and times for these activiities vary so check before you go.
Tybee Island Hotels, Motels, Inns, Campgrounds, Vacation Rentals and Bed and Breakfasts
Overnight visitors to Tybee Island have a wide choice of accommodations. Guests stay in hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, or rent private cottages and beach homes. Tybee’s River End Campground also offers a variety of options.
Tybee Island is Located near Savannah and Hilton Head Island
Take a half hour drive to nearby Savannah and enjoy its cultural offerings, incredible restaurants, and historical sites. About an hour away is Hilton Head Island, with its great golf courses, gourmet restaurants, and family-friendly activities.
Come to Tybee Island for a day or come for an extended stay. Soak up the sun, enjoy southern hospitality, relax on the beach or engage in one of the water sports. Explore coastal Georgia history and learn about the wildlife that inhabits the area. Or just spend a day in a beach chair soaking up the sun. The wide variety of activities provides something for every member of the family to enjoy.
