While many Star Wars fans hate on The Phantom Menace, many of them also consider the battle of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi against Darth Maul to be the greatest lightsaber battle in the whole Star Wars universe. And it’s due to Darth Maul’s famous double-sided lightsaber.
This powerful weapon made its debut in The Phantom Menace and it was a sight to behold. It’s appeared in other Star Wars stories, but its appearance in that historic battle is the most memorable and the most celebrated appearance.
Are you interested in learning more about the history of this lightsaber in the Star Wars lore? Then read on.
History of the Double-Sided Lightsaber
The double-sided lightsaber is said to have been forged by the Dark Lords of the Old Sith Empire. It first appeared in battle being yielded by former Jedi Knight turned Sith Lord Exar Kun. The Jedi had never seen such a weapon before, and that element of surprise, as well as Kun’s ferocity, caused many to fall victim to it.
The lightsaber went missing when the Jedis vanquished Kun in the battle on Yavin 4. The Jedi sought out to recover it, and eventually, Jedi Master Celeste Morne located it.
The benefits of double-sided lightsabers, such as their element of surprise and their high rate of an attack, made them remarkably useful in battle. They functioned as lightsabers for Siths and lightsabers for Jedis in battle. However, they eventually fell into obscurity and vanished.
Eventually, though, the double-sided lightsaber returned in the hands of Darth Maul, whose ferociousness and effective combat style with the weapon made his lightsaber legendary. Other double-sided lightsaber users included Asajj Ventress, General Grievous, and Darth Zannah.
