Around the world, one game that is loved and played by all is rummy. As you move from the western part of the world to the eastern, you will find different variations of the game being played. These include gin rummy, contract rummy, Shanghai rummy, Indian Rummy and more. In our country, 13 cards and 21 card rummy is enjoyed the most.
The rummy variant, gin rummy, was first played in the United States and became widespread in a short period. On the other hand, Indian rummy is commonly known and more popular in the subcontinent. It is played both offline and online. Both these formats of rummy are packed with unlimited entertainment and fun. There are many differences in these formats of rummy. It starts from the objective of the game to the dealers and even the gameplay itself. But do you know what makes it better than the American gin rummy?
Let’s understand how Indian rummy is a cut above gin rummy:
1. Use of Joker
Surprisingly, gin rummy does not use any Joker. While on the other hand, Indian rummy is incomplete with this card. The joker card plays an essential role in the game and helps form impure sequences and sets. Hence, the card deck used in Indian Rummy has 53 cards, including a printed joker.
In Indian rummy, there are two types of jokers: wild and printed. The wild or the cut joker (as called by many gaming platforms) is randomly selected at the beginning of the game. The remaining cards of the same rank and different suits also act as the cut jokers in the game.
Note that the printed joker can also replace any card in a set or impure sequence. All jokers are worth zero points and help reduce the overall points.
So, if you have 2 or 3 joker cards in your hand, you can quickly create combinations and make a valid declaration in Indian rummy. However, in gin rummy, you may have to wait for the right card to complete sets and sequences.
2. Versatile Aces
In Indian rummy, aces are one of the highest cards, worth 10 points each. Plus, they can be used to create sequences with both high and low cards. For instance, Queen of Spades, King of Spades and Ace of Spades. Or, Ace of Spades, 2 of Spades and 3 of Spades.
But in gin rummy, aces are the lowest cards, worth 1 point each. So, they can be used to complete a sequence only with the low cards like 2 and 3. For instance, Ace of hearts, 2 of hearts and 3 of hearts is a valid sequence in the game.
3. No Need to Knock
If you read the rules of Indian rummy, you will find that the scoring system of this format is simple and straightforward. If you make a valid declaration, your score will be zero. And the point calculation for losing players is based on the number of unmatched cards in their hands.
But in gin rummy, the players have two options to make a valid declaration of their hand. The first one is to arrange the cards and declare without any deadwood. It is the count of the sum of the point values of the deadwood cards. Like aces is 1 point, face cards are 10 points each. This is called going gin, and the player will get 25 points.
The second way is called knocking. Game players can go for knocking if the total value of their unmatched cards is less than 10 points. Then, the overall score of that player will be equal to the difference between their deadwood cards and the opponent’s.
Hence, there are high chances of losing in gin rummy if you have 3-4 unmatched cards, as your opponent might also opt for knocking with 1 or 2 cards. However, it is not the case in Indian rummy.
Both the variants of rummy are unique in their own ways. But Indian rummy is comparatively easier to understand and play.
