Some FAQs from People Who Want to Store Their Belongings

There are many reasons as to why people choose to use self-storage facilities. In fact, the only commonality between these people is that they tend to have a number of questions they want to have answered first. Some of those questions are addressed below.

Some FAQs from People Who Want to Store Their Belongings

  1. Who Uses Self Storage?
  • People who are leaving their home for a long period of time.
  • People who are moving home.
  • Businesses with low storage levels.
  • People or businesses who are refurbishing.
  • People or businesses who downsize.
  1. What Can I Put in Self Storage?

Different DC storage facilities have different requirements. However, most allow you to store pretty much everything. The exception is illegal equipment and, in some cases, certain chemicals.

  1. Is Self Storage Secure?

Again, different facilities have different levels of security. A storage container placed in your backyard will often only have a padlock, unless you have something stronger yourself. The most secure facilities have 24 hour manned security, CCTV systems and alarms.

  1. How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of your unit will vary on a number of different factors, including:

  • Whether you want a storage unit in a storage facility, or whether you want a storage container delivered to your home.
  • The size of the container you require.
  • Whether or not you require climate control.
  • The length of time you need the unit for.
  • Whether or not you are using it as a removal service, meaning you will actually need it at two different locations.

You can generally get discounts if you hire the unit for a longer period of time. Make sure you speak to a number of different rental companies and receive quotations in order to find the one that offers the best value for money.

  1. How Big Should my Unit Be?

This obviously depends entirely on what you will be putting in it. If you are confused, you should speak to the company from which you intend to hire, as they will be able to determine how big your unit should be depending on what you want to put in it. What is perhaps more important, however, is how you store your items in the unit. You should put items you will not need to access all the way at the back, with items that you may need to use at the front, so that you can always reach them.

  1. Can I Access Items that I Put in the Unit

Generally, the answer to this is yes. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • If you have a storage container on your own grounds, you can always access it.
  • If you have a unit in a storage facility, you will only be able to access it when the facility is open. Some are open 24/7, others during working days only and others still require you to make an appointment.
  • If you are using your storage container for a house move, you will probably not be able to access the unit once it leaves your home, even if there is a period of time before it gets to the new home.
