Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the biggest releases of a huge year for video gaming in 2018. It was up there with the very best, sold incredibly well, and looks set to be a fan favorite for years to come. At launch, Red Dead 2 was without a huge and expansive multiplayer mode which developers Rockstar were known for from games like the long-running Grand Theft Auto V. The online mode was promised from the start and delivered at the end of May this year, with many people playing the beta version for months before its full official release.
With Red Dead Online now being up and running and filled with old Western action, many thought that Rockstar would begin to phase out support and scale back GTA V’s online mode, seeing as it had been running since 2013 and they would want as many players as possible on Red Dead Online. Instead, Rockstar is going big in the new summer update for GTA Online, finally opening the long-awaited casino.
Should Rockstar adhere to timing strategies?
The opening of the casino will be huge for anyone still playing GTA V online and will be big enough to pull back many others who have since moved on to other games. But as is the case in the casino industry which they look to mimic in the new release, Rockstar may have wanted to exercise a certain amount of caution.
Like Rockstar in video gaming, Microgaming is one of the most popular online casino game developers in the world, so much so that people seek out Microgaming online casinos over many others. As a pioneer of the industry, Microgaming knows that timing is everything. One of their most popular game series, Lara Croft Tomb Raider, saw its initial release in 2004. They then waited until 2008 to bring out the sequel, Secret of the Sword, and have only just released Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs via independent developers Triple Edge Studios.
These incredibly popular online game releases have been given sufficient space not because game series fans need to time to try them out, but because Microgaming also releases hundreds of other games and don’t want their big titles to keep drawing away from their new creations. Rockstar’s timing of the big casino release in GTA V will be seen by many as unnecessary competition to the budding Red Dead Online.
Rockstar confident in both products
Even though Rockstar created both games, Red Dead and GTA are very different in their themes, meaning that many people who play one won’t play the other. That said, there will be a significant crossover between the two as Rockstar is a very popular developer.
As GTA V quite an old game now, there’s a big chance that the only people still playing are super fans who have put a lot of time in and have most likely spent a lot of money on microtransactions. For Rockstar, these whales keep on giving, so the developers are more than happy to give them updates, with a new casino opening presenting the perfect opportunity to give them continuous gameplay to enjoy.
Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar, has recently claimed that Red Dead Online has been more successful than GTA Online was at this stage of its life. So despite GTA V continuing to thrive on its die-hard fans, Red Dead 2 has been able to establish a large player base in its own world.
With two massive franchises that are different enough to appeal to many different kinds of players, Rockstar can successfully run live service online multiplayer modes on Red Dead 2 and GTA V. As long as players are still logging into the worlds, Rockstar will continue to provide them with new content. We likely won’t see the developers move away from GTA V’s online mode until the release of GTA VI.
