Believe it or not, your smartphone is a goldmine for hackers and thieves. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to try and protect your personal information. If you want to help yourself here then you need to think about all of the data that is stored on your smartphone, whether it’s text messages, email exchanges or even browsing history. You wouldn’t want any of this falling into the wrong hands, so you need to make sure that you take the right precautions because if you don’t then you may end up putting your data at risk.
Set a Password
If you don’t quite know how to set a password on your mobile phone then you’ll be glad to know that this is very easy to do. If you don’t have a password on your phone, then this is very similar to leaving the front door open. Leaving your phone unprotected means that anyone can dive right into your photos, emails or even your personal data. Setting up your phone with a password is super easy to do and it takes less than a minute too. If you can you should always set a PIN on your phone. It’s much harder to crack when compared to drawing a pattern with your finger. If you have an Apple IPhone then you will be asked to set a PIN as soon as you start up your device for the first time. If you don’t have a new phone however then you may be limited to a four-digit pin. If this is the case, then you’ll be glad to know that you can upgrade so that you always get access to the latest capabilities.
Insure It
You have to know that even though you might have all of the software updates you could ever need, this won’t protect you from having your phone stolen or other forms of danger. If you want to stop this from happening, then you need to keep your phone out of sight as much as possible. You also need to make sure that you have a quality insurance policy as well. If you do then you can easily make sure that you keep your phone safe and if something does happen, you will be covered for it. Insuring your phone is incredibly easy to do when you go through a service like Lemonade.
Software Update
If there are any updates that you can download to your phone, then you need to make sure that you download them. Of course, you do have to make sure that you are connected to the internet if you want to do this, and you also need to make sure that you have 50% battery too. Both types of phone, Apple and Android, have their own official app store and when you go there, you will be able to download anything you need. Samsung even have their own as well. The main thing that you have to remember is that viruses and malware often come from third-party apps and when you download them, you give them full access to your phone. If you have the latest update on the other hand, then you can significantly reduce your chances.
Don’t Use your WiFi Hotspot
Some phones give you the chance to turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. When you do, you will soon find that other devices can connect to your network. This is good if you have a friend who needs to access the internet through your phone, but at the end of the day, it also puts you at risk for other people as well. Make sure that this hotspot is turned off because if you don’t then you may be giving hackers a chance to access your phone.
Public WiFi
If you connect to public WiFi then this can also put you at risk for hackers. Hackers can easily get access to your phone by going through your WiFi network so you have to make sure that you do everything you can to stop this from happening. One way for you to get around this would be for you to use your data as much as possible. Public WiFi networks are never usually secure so make sure that you don’t enter any personal data when you are using them. If you do enter data then you may find that you put yourself way more at risk and this is the last thing that you need when you have so much to think about already.
